"Today we are beginning to notice that the new media are not just mechanical gimmicks for creating worlds of illusion, but new languages with new and unique powers of expression."
The Future of New Media in School
Talking about New Media in a future sense is no longer a question of technology. We have the ideas, the possibilities and the tools to create what no generation could have ever dreamed of. The development of New Media is going to grow and as long as a human being has a desire for something, there is always going to be someone who is going to fulfill these needs.
Looking back, I remember getting my first cell phone, I was about 14 years old. It was a Nokia 3210, the first cell phone with games on it. I remember how proud I was being able to play this low pixel colourless game “snake”. Today I use my new cell phone to take 3D- pictures with high resolution and millions of colours.
New Media has also influenced the school. Presentations are done with Power Point, students upload their homework on a virtual classroom and teachers use smartboards instead of the classic chalkboards. New Media is growing so quickly, that schools are not even able to adapt that fast.
For the future we do not have to worry about what we are going to have but how we are going to use it. The focus will have to be on a cultural and societal level and not only on developing new tools. We are already breaking through an era where lifestyle and cultural habits cooperate with the New Media we have right now. However the appropriate use of these things is a necessity. More over there are so many important tools a lot of people have never heard of.
The future of New Media first of all has to be responsible for creating a culture that is supportive of people’s desires, that´s inclusive of those that don´t have access to the latest technology and who do not have the appropriate recourses to cope with it.
“What we’re faced with now in the world of new media is making sure we are creating environments that everybody can participate in, and making sure that we’re encouraging a culture of inclusion.“(Anil Dash)
