Facebook in School?!
One important teachers skill in the world of new media is the awareness of ongoing trends. Six years ago, it was the first time when I came across with Facebook during my anual stay in the United States. I could definitely say it was an American thing. For me it was the German schüler/-studiVZ. It was nice because because I had my German friends separated from my American friends and I had one social network for communicating in English. A few years later almost everyone abandoned his schüler/-studiVZ account and Facebook turned to one of the biggest social networks worldwide. Now I have all my friends together in one social environment.
When Facebook became so much part in a students everyday life, then why not sticking to it?
A good and thoughtful teacher would now say:
"Great... why not using this situation for my own good."
I guess, there is almost no student in Germany who does not have an Facebook account and who does not access Facebook at least once a day. So two problems you always have when using media are already solved. Students already have an account and they know how to use it.

Ways you should be using Facebook in your classroom
In the following I am going to give you some ideas of how to integrate Facebook in your classroom so you can use it for your teaching ideas:
Create Groups: You can create private groups for all your classes. Once it is done, you have multiple ways of sharing information like posting exercises, uploading worksheets, posting informative weblinks...
Allow shy students to communicate: Open a discussion on Facebook and you will be surprised about the results. Even of those students who use to hide in the classroom
Post Homework: From now on, your students will never forget what the homework was about. They can ask questions and can also comment on others ideas.
Engage students outside of classroom: This is a guarantee for better in-class teaching. If you manage that students spend some time at home on the topic you have discussed in class, you will be able to get more into detail. With Facebook, students are more motivated because they do not see it automatically as a homework exercise
