"Auf Ton und Video basierende Aktivitäten"
This is the teaching plan on which I posted my comment. It was taken from the following webside: http://vzl.online.uni-marburg.de/.
In order to access the file from the original source, you will have to create an account, which is done very easily.

What is the teaching plan about?
First of all there is to say it is not a fulled-planned teaching lesson with accurate time indications and a step by step plan but rather a task which can be modified in different ways in order to achieve different things. It is a combination of working with new media and improving communication skills with a foreign language. That includes vocabulary learning and improving the cultural knowledge.
Sounds incredible and unrealistic, I know. A single task that can cope so many things for learning a foreign language. But first of all let me tell you how this works.
You need...
- An interactive white board
- A topic in which students are interested
- A short video
- A teaching goal
As you see there is not too much work beforehand. Once you have prepared everything you are ready to start the creative and interactive lesson. The lesson plan I focused on has the topic about football. The teacher illustrates a short part of the football game on the IWB. After that, it is up to you how you work with.
You have multiple choices:
- Try to involve students in a discussion by asking questions about the video. You can involve personal questiones like: Do you like to watch sports on TV or do you prefer doing sports on your own? By doing that you can focus on specific vocabulary.
- Vocabulary learning: Ask for a volunteer to come up front and play a short sequence from the video. Pause the video and ask the student to name all the objects he/she can see on the freezed image by writing on the IWB. You can repeat this task with other students. In addition, while the other students are waiting for the results of the volunteering student, let them write one sentence for every named item on the board.
- Writing and speaking activity: Let the students watch a few minutes of the football game without sound. Their task is now to comment on what they have seen. They could do it on their own or in a dialogue with a partner.
- Project: Let the students do their own short video on an introduced topic, which later can be presented. Depending on the topic additional activities can be done to work with the presented in videos in class.
Some of the varieties listed above were not mentioned in the teaching plan but came up to mind when thinking about the task. As you can see there are many different ways to work with this specific exercise. The lesson goal is therefore very important so you as a teacher can control the students learning progress.
Some more advantages of the teaching idea
- It is absolutely flexible and transformable for many situations students will come across in learning a second language. The good part is: It is authentic for almost all intents and purposes.
- It is multifaceted because of an open class environment.
- Students communicate, they learn new vocabulary, they are interested in what they learn and additionally, they work with new media.
- You can work with it in every class regardless of the students age
